Hamilton Island Race Week
Australia’s Most Iconic Sailing & Lifestyle Event

Every August, the turquoise waters of the Whitsundays become the stage for one of  Australia’s most prestigious sporting and social events. Hamilton Island Race Week is far more than a sailing regatta. A week-long celebration of world-class racing, luxury hospitality, incredible food and wine, and unforgettable island experiences.

Held in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, the event attracts close to 200 yachts, thousands of sailors, spectators and holidaymakers from across Australia and around the world. Whether you’re an experienced sailor, a luxury traveller or simply looking for an unforgettable tropical escape, Hamilton Island Race Week offers something unlike anywhere else.

For 2026, Race Week will be held from 15–22 August, continuing a tradition that has made it one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most celebrated sailing events.

Why Is Hamilton Island Race Week So Popular?

Unlike many sporting events, Hamilton Island Race Week combines elite competition with an incredible holiday atmosphere. The racing itself is spectacular. Hundreds of yachts, from high-performance racing machines and grand prix yachts to elegant cruising yachts and classic vessels compete throughout the Whitsunday Islands.

But once the sails come down each afternoon, the island transforms into one of Australia’s most vibrant waterfront destinations.

Visitors spend their evenings enjoying:

• Sunset cocktails overlooking the marina
• Long lunches featuring Australia’s best produce
• Live music and entertainment
• Waterfront restaurants and bars
• Champagne lounges
• Exclusive dining experiences
• Pop-up hospitality activations
• Luxury brand showcases
• Crew parties and social events
• Casual beachside gatherings

It’s this balance between serious sailing and relaxed island luxury that has built Race Week’s legendary reputation over the past four decades.

More Than Just Sailing

You don’t need to own a yacht or even know anything about sailing to enjoy Race Week. Many visitors travel purely for the atmosphere. During the day you’ll find spectators lining the marina, watching yachts depart each morning before heading out onto the water to witness the racing from nearby vessels.

What else the Whitsundays has to offer:

• Whitehaven Beach
• Hill Inlet Lookout
• Snorkelling vibrant coral reefs
• Diving the Great Barrier Reef
• Paddleboarding and kayaking
• Scenic helicopter flights
• Island hikes
• Golf at Hamilton Island Golf Club
• Spa treatments
• Boutique shopping
• Waterfront dining

With over 20 restaurants and bars and more than 60 experiences available across Hamilton Island, Race Week naturally becomes a luxury tropical holiday as much as a sporting event.
